Owner of this car is my buddy. He seen the Audi A8 advertise on craigslist for a good deal. He asked me, would I drive an hour away to help him take a look at the car? The lady that he purchased the car from: said she was selling it because the car would not go into reverse.
I explain to my buddy that I never rebuilt one of these transmission before. But I was willing to challenge myself and help him out. Before I touch the transmission, I done a tone of research. I explaifn to him that he would have to take the remove and install the transmission. I did not want to mess with that part.
Once he got it out of the car, it was a challenge lifting the transmission (it was very heavy). We had source all the parts from a company in PA that specialize in ZF transmission parts. This transmission design was different than what I was use to, so I had to pay extra attention while I was taking it a part and rebuilding it.
The end result was a success and my buddy wife is very with her new car.
Symptom: the car would not go into reverse
Problem: the reverse piston was damage (very common problem)
Fix: master rebuild kit, upgraded the reverse piston with an updated one from ZF. added a transgo pressure boost valve to handle pressure spikes.
